Urea (AdBlue) Filter Maintenance for Euro VI Trucks

AdBlue (urea solution) is what makes Euro VI emissions compliance work. The urea filter keeps the SCR injector clean. Skip it and you replace the injector, at twenty times the cost of the filter.

What the urea filter actually does

AdBlue is sensitive to contamination. Dust, biological growth, and crystallization can clog the dosing module's tiny nozzles. The urea filter sits between the tank and the injector and removes those contaminants before they reach the nozzle. A blocked injector causes an emissions fault that takes the truck off the road.

Replacement interval

Most manufacturers specify 200,000–250,000 km or every two years, whichever comes first. Tighten that if the operating environment is dusty or if the AdBlue source is variable in quality. The filter is cheap enough that the conservative interval almost always pays for itself.

AdBlue quality matters too

An ISO 22241-compliant AdBlue source matters as much as the filter. Off-spec urea will foul both the filter and the dosing nozzle. If you change supplier, check the conformance certificate. Storage matters too, AdBlue degrades above 30°C and crystallizes below -11°C.
