Air Filter Selection in Dusty Environments

An air filter is the single biggest determinant of engine life in heavy machinery. In dusty environments (quarries, mines, demolition sites) standard air filters reach their dust-holding capacity in a fraction of the time the manufacturer rated for them.

Two-stage filtration matters

In high-dust applications, a two-stage system (a cyclonic pre-cleaner followed by the main element) removes 90%+ of the dust before it reaches the filter media. The pre-cleaner does the bulk separation; the filter handles the fines. Without the pre-cleaner, the filter saturates in hours.

Service when the indicator says so, not on a calendar

Air filter restriction indicators are mechanical: when intake vacuum exceeds the spec threshold, the indicator pops or latches. Service the filter when the indicator says, not on a calendar. A clean filter on a calendar change costs money; a saturated filter that wasn't caught by the calendar costs an engine.

Reusable vs. single-use

Some operations use reusable oil-bath or foam pre-cleaners that can be washed and re-oiled. The main element is single-use; cleaning it with compressed air voids filtration efficiency. If your pre-cleaner is reusable, that's where to focus the cleaning effort.
